Maggoty Wood is a lovely, free to visit woodland with a short circular route, making it perfect for a peaceful walk. The woods are home to the grave of Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson (1691-1773), a dancing master and jester at Gawsworth Hall. The area is especially beautiful in spring when the native bluebells bloom, and part of the wood has been fenced off to help preserve this valuable wildflower habitat.
